新南威尔斯州副总检察长（英语：Solicitor General for New South Wales）是澳大利亚新南威尔斯州的官方律政专员之一，也是新南威尔斯州检察长的副手。其可在检察长空缺的情况下行使检察长的职权。副总检察长与刑事法律专员（Crown Advocate）、刑事检控专员（英语：Director of Public Prosecutions (New South Wales)）（Director of Public Prosecutions）及民事检察专员（英语：Crown Solicitor's Office (New South Wales)）（Crown Solicitor）一同合作，并担任州官方及州政府的法律及宪法顾问之一。

副总检察长在法庭上被称为“副总检察长先生”（Mr Solicitor）或“副总检察长女士”（Ms Solicitor）。尽管该职衔直译为“总事务律师”，该职位通常是由大律师（barrister）担任，且自1925年以来一直由英皇律师（Queen's Counsel或King's Counsel）或资深大律师（Senior Counsel）担任。以前副总检察长如检察长一样是政治委任，但它自1922年以来与议会分离，自1969年以来，副总检察长一直为与司法厅有联系的法定职位。

副总检察长根据《1969年副总检察长法令》（Solicitor General Act 1969）的规定运作。[1]该法令第2条规定，副总检察长须为“具有至少7年资历的澳大利亚律师”，并且不得为厅长级官员。退休年龄定为72岁。[1]副总检察长在澳大利亚高等法院及其他法院担任官方法律顾问，并就民事及刑事事宜（包括宪制法事宜）向检察长提供建议。[2]直到1987年，副总检察长有权在新南威尔斯州的刑事上诉法院对刑事讼案提起上诉，然而这后来成为刑事检察专员（Director of Public Prosecutions）的职责。[3]

约翰·宾吉（John Plunkett）是第一位被册封为为英皇律师的新南威尔斯州大律师，他于1856年6月6日由检察长职位退休。[4][5]第一位被委任为副总检察长时已是英皇律师的人为John Hargrave。Cecil Weigall于1922年被委任为副总检察长，并于1925年被册封为英皇律师。Harold Snelling在被委任时是英皇律师。自从1969年副总检察长职位转变为法定职位后，只有身为英皇律师的人选才能被委任为副总检察长。[6]1993年，新南威尔斯州停止册封英皇律师，这一要求随之被取消。[7]

  1. ^ Plunkett was appointed to the Legislative Council on 19 April 1836 when he became Acting Attorney-General.[15]
  2. ^ Salomons was not appointed to the Legislative Council until 11 August 1870, 7 months after his appointment as Solicitor General.[16]
  3. ^ The office was not filled however Richard O'Connor and George Reid were temporarily appointed to allow them to deputise for the Attorney-General in his absence.[17]
  4. ^ Pollock's appointment was controversial because he was a public servant as Secretary of the Attorney-General's department and had never practiced as a barrister.[18]
