南極交響曲

南極交響曲（義大利語：Sinfonia antartica，英語：Antarctic Symphony）是英國作曲家佛漢·威廉士的交響作品，創作於1949至52年。是他的第7號交響曲，但正如他其他以標題命名的交響曲一樣，普遍都不會以編號來稱呼。

背景

1947年，佛漢·威廉士為電影《南極的史葛船長》創作配樂，因而對南極這個題裁非常感興趣，當完成了配樂後，便著手以當中的旋律，另外譜寫這首樂曲。樂曲是題獻給另一位英國專長譜寫電影配樂的作曲家恩斯特·厄文。

樂曲於1953年1月14日於曼徹斯特舉行，擔任指揮的是約翰·巴比羅利，由哈萊樂團演奏。4月2日再由芝加哥交響樂團及库贝里克作美國首演。

樂隊編制

香港管弦樂團於2013年演奏《南極交響曲》時所使用的風鳴器。

• 木管樂器：短笛（兼任第3長笛）、2長笛、2雙簧管、英國管、2單簧管、低音單簧管、2巴松管、低音巴松管
• 銅管樂器：4圓號、3小號、3長號、大號
• 敲擊樂器：定音鼓、大鼓、中鼓、小鼓、鈸、三角鐵、鑼、鐘、鐘琴、木琴、顫音琴、風鳴器
• 鍵盤樂器：鋼琴、鋼片琴、管風琴（只在第3樂章）
• 絃樂器：第1小提琴、第2小提琴、中提琴、大提琴、低音提琴、豎琴
• 聲樂（只在第1、5樂章）：女高音獨唱、三部女聲合唱小組，另再加一位旁述，於每個樂章演奏前朗讀相關的金句語錄。

樂曲結構

全首交響曲共分為五個樂章，佛漢·威廉士特意為每一個樂章都加添了一段朗讀段落，並由一個旁述，於每個樂章演奏前朗讀。內容選自英國的短詩、聖經、以及史葛船長所撰寫的日誌內容等。官方的演奏時間為42分鐘。

• 第1樂章：前奏（Prelude）：Andante maestoso，3/4 及 4/4
• 第2樂章：諧躍曲（Scherzo）：中速（Moderato），6/8，9/8 及 3/4
• 第3樂章：風景（Landscape）：Lento，4/4 及 3/2；直落（Segue）
• 第4樂章：間奏（Intermezzo）：Andante maestoso，3/4 及 4/4
• 第5樂章：後奏（Epilogue）：Alla marcia, moderato (non troppo allegro)，4/4 及 3/4

　I do not regret this journey; we took risks, we knew we took them, things have come out against us, therefore we have no cause for complaint.

軼事

• 在首演時，宣傳單張把「南極」一詞的意大利文串錯，變成了「Antarctica」，直至差不多公演時才發覺出錯而要作出修正。
• 樂曲於1956年6月21日於南極哈雷海灣（Halley Bay）的皇家學會南極研究基地（Royal Society Antarctic Expedition's Base）內作過演出。
