If the return home involvesa journey of several days, the victors will, if possible,pass the nights in the houses of friendly villages,where they are made much of, especially thosewho have taken heads; and on these occasions theglamour of victory is apt to turn the heads of someof the women and to break down the reserve thatmodesty normally imposes upon them. On approaching their own village, whither therumour of their success usually precedes them,the war-party is received with loud acclamations,the people coming down to the riverside to receivethem. Before they ascend to the house, the headshave to be safely lodged in a small hut speciallybuilt for their reception ; and the young boys arebrought down to go through their first initiationin the arts of war. Each child is made to holda sword and, with the assistance of some agedwarrior, to strike a blow at one of the newly capturedheads. The older boys, some nine or ten years

WAR 175 of age, who are ripe for their second participationin mock warfare, also strike at a head in a similarway, but engage also in mimic battles with oneanother, using wooden swords and spears, and,curiously enough, small roughly made bows andarrows/ It is customary for the victorious warriorsto spend the first night after their return encampedbefore the house. A strip of green damt isangis tied about the left wrist of each man who hastaken part in the expedition, and also of each of theyoung boys. Those who have taken heads adornalso their war - caps with the same leaf and withfeathered sticks. On the following day a tall post ofbamboo (balawing) is erected near the figure of thewar-god. It is covered with frayed palm leaves (daunisang), and from its tip a single head, also wrappedin leaves, is suspended by a long cord (PL 66).Before the altar-post of the war-god several shorterthicker posts are erected, and to each of these twoor three small pieces of human flesh, brought homefro
